IrfanView for Mac? Free alternatives that feel the same
Updated 2026-10-31
IrfanView, Honeyview and the Windows Photos viewer all work the same way: open one image, press the arrow keys to page, scroll to zoom. Preview on Mac doesn't, and it's the first thing switchers miss.
Is there an IrfanView for Mac?
No. IrfanView officially supports Windows only, and Honeyview from Bandisoft is Windows-only too. Anything labeled "for Mac" is either a different app or Windows software wrapped in Wine, so be careful with unofficial installers.
Alternatives that run natively on a Mac
Flipic: free and open source, a 1.8 MB download. Double-click a photo and page with ← →; the wheel zooms by default; 0 zooms to 100% at the pointer. Every shortcut can be remapped, and if you reversed your wheel with Mos you can flip the zoom direction.
XnView MP: a full-featured cross-platform viewer and organizer, free for personal use; great for heavy conversion and metadata work, busier interface.
qView: a minimal open-source viewer that is little more than the image; few features by design.
Things that work differently on a Mac
- Default viewer: click Make Default Viewer in Flipic's Settings.
- Deleting: ⌘⌫ moves a photo to the Trash; the Delete key alone doesn't.
- Scroll direction: macOS uses natural scrolling, the reverse of Windows; change it in System Settings or for the mouse only with Mos.
